How to Install a Window Feeder (8 Steps)

Bird watching can be a delightful and relaxing hobby, and installing a window feeder is a fantastic way to bring birds closer to your home. Follow these eight simple steps to set up your window feeder and start enjoying the sights and sounds of your feathered friends. These steps are made specifically for our window feeder, but these principles can be applied to similar window feeders that utilize suction cups as well.

Step 1: Choose the Right Feeder

Choosing the right feeder is essential for a successful bird-watching experience. Our window feeder is designed with durable materials, strong suction cups, and an easy-to-clean removable tray. Here are some features to consider when selecting a window feeder:

  • Room for multiple birds to feed simultaneously.
  • Large enough to hold plenty of seed, reducing the frequency of refills.
  • An open back design to prevent the acrylic from getting scratched over time, ensuring a clear view.
  • Very strong suction cups to keep the feeder securely in place.
  • Suction cups located outside the viewing area to maximize viewing space.

Step 2: Select the Ideal Location

The location of your feeder is crucial for attracting birds and for your viewing pleasure. Choose a window with a clear view and minimal obstructions. Avoid placing the feeder too close to trees or bushes where predators might hide. Additionally, consider the following:

  • Select a spot where you can comfortably watch the birds without disturbing them.
  • Ensure the location is out of reach of squirrels and other animals that might try to access the feeder.

Step 3: Clean the Window

A clean window surface is necessary for the suction cups to adhere properly. Follow these steps to ensure a clean surface:

  1. Use soap and water to clean the window thoroughly.
  2. Wipe down again with Windex if needed.
  3. Rinse with clean water to remove any soap residue.
  4. Dry the window completely with a lint-free cloth.

Step 4: Attach Suction Cups to Feeder Base

Attach the suction cups to the base of the feeder with the tray removed. Make sure the suction cups are securely attached to the base.

*Tip: Soak the cups in hot or warm water for 5-10 minutes to allow them to take their normal shape, in case they are misshapen which can happen during packing and shipping.

Step 5: Attach Base to Window

Now it’s time to attach the base to the window:

  1. Slightly dampen the suction cups with a little saliva or a tiny bit of cooking oil to improve adhesion.
  2. Press the suction cups firmly against the window.
  3. Ensure the base is level and securely attached to the window.

Step 6: Fill the Removable Tray

Choosing the right bird seed is crucial for attracting the types of birds you want to see. Here are some popular options:

  • Black Oil Sunflower Seeds: Highly nutritious and favored by a wide variety of birds including cardinals, chickadees, and finches.
  • Mixed Seeds: A great all-around choice that attracts a diverse range of birds. Look for mixes that include sunflower seeds, millet, and cracked corn.
  • Nyjer (Thistle) Seeds: Ideal for attracting small finches such as goldfinches and redpolls.
  • Safflower Seeds: Preferred by cardinals, chickadees, and some finches, and less attractive to squirrels and blackbirds.
  • Peanuts: Whole or shelled, peanuts are a high-energy food that attracts jays, woodpeckers, and chickadees.

Our feeder’s removable tray is designed for easy filling and holds up to 2 cups of seed. Simply fill the tray with your chosen bird seed, ensuring not to overfill to prevent spillage and waste. This design allows for quick refills and easy cleaning, keeping the feeding area tidy and inviting for your feathered friends.

Step 7: Slide Tray into Feeder

Slide the filled tray into the attached base. Make sure the tray is securely in place to prevent spillage or accidents.

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your feeder attractive to birds:

  • Clean the feeder regularly to prevent mold and bacteria buildup.
  • Refill the tray as needed to keep the birds coming back.
  • Monitor the feeder for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Take it down every so often and clean the window.

Enjoy watching the variety of birds that visit your feeder. Bird watching can be a peaceful and educational activity for all ages. Installing a window feeder is a simple process that can bring endless joy and a closer connection to nature.
